Dinesh Kartik Carrer

Domestic Carrer

Dinesh Karthik made his debut for Tamil Nadu in 2002 against Baroda in the Ranji Trophy. In his first season, he scored a total of 179 runs at an average of 35.5 and took 11 wickets. However, he was inconsistent as a wicket-keeper, so he was dropped. The following season, he played for the local U-19 team where his performance improved. Dinesh Kartik shares what he learned from this camp. Dinesh Karthik played well in the second division where he scored 180 at an average of 60 with three half-centuries and was included in the national under-19 team to play three one-day internationals against Nepal.

He returned to the U-22 team in the next season after performing well in the Chenna League and was selected in the Indian Emerging Players Squad and was in the squad for the triangular series with Sri Lanka and Pakistan for the same. He was selected for the 2004 U-19 World Cup in Bangladesh 2004 and returned to the Ranji Trophy squad in the 2003/04 season.

2008/09 was a great home season for Dinesh Karthik – he scored a hundred against Railways in Baroda, 123 and 107, and then shared a partnership with Subramanian Badrinath and 213 against Uttar Pradesh to beat them by an innings. He scored 72 in the back match and participated in the Duleep Trophy where he scored 153 against the central region. Karthik amassed a total of 1026 runs at an average of 64 which included five centuries and a half-century to end a remarkable season.

Karthik also had a good domestic career in 2009/10 when he led Tamil Nadu to six matches in the Ranji Trophy season. He scored 152 against Punjab and 117 against Orissa to take his total to 443 for the season.

International Carrer

Dinesh Karthik made his ODI debut in the NatWest series against England on September 5, 2004 and played against Kenya in the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy. He then made his Test debut in the fourth Test against Australia on 3 November 2004, replacing him. – by Parthiv Patel.

He also played two home matches against South Africa, also in November 2004, but had only one good 46 runs in the second Test. The following month, he joined the Test team in Bangladesh for a two-match series, but did not contribute to India’s massive total of over 500 in both matches. MS Dhoni’s selection as the wicket-keeper batsman in the ODI team limited Karthik’s chances till April 2006, but he was retained for the home Test series against Pakistan in March 2005. He once again failed to bat and score big.

game except for 93 runs in the second innings of the second test to establish a partnership of 166 runs with Rahul Dravid. After scoring one point in every match against Zimbabwe in September 2005, he was replaced by Dhoni who has had a great career so far. After Dhoni injured his finger, he was recalled for the third Test against South Africa in January 2007 and entered into an opening partnership of one hundred with Wasim Jaffer, giving away 63 runs. Before the Test series, he was inactive in ODIs but scored an unbeaten 31 in T20s to lead India to victory over South Africa.
In the next four-match ODI series against the West Indies, he took a struggling Indian team to a good score with his 63-wicket haul in the match at Cuttack, and helped in India’s victory in this match.

He was selected for the series against Sri Lanka in the 2007 Cricket World Cup, but did not contribute with the bat. After being retained for the opening of the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa, he was later released due to poor performance. He went to Bangladesh as a professional opening batsman after many batsmen quit following India’s flop performance in the 2007 World Cup, and scored his first century during the second Test in Dhaka.

A regular scorer of more than 50, he became India’s top scorer during their tour of England in mid-2007, but did not make the most of his chances in ODIs.
Despite showing an average performance against Pakistan in late 2007, he was retained as Australia’s opening batsman, but only for one match in the T20 team. Replacing Dhoni, who was rested, he again showed poor form against Sri Lanka in July 2008 and was dropped from the squad.
In subsequent years, he played as Dhoni’s replacement against teams like New Zealand and Bangladesh, but was later replaced by Wriddhiman Saha in the South Africa series in 2010.

Riding on his good form in domestic cricket and the IPL, he returned to the ODI team in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.

IPL

Dinesh Karthik’s efforts to get out of the side did not make an impact in his IPL career as Delhi Daredevils picked him for the inaugural edition of the IPL for around 2.4 crores (USD 525,000). However, Karthik did not do justice to his skills as he managed just 145 runs in 8 innings. However, DD managed to make it to the semi-finals. After two years with the Delhi franchise, Karthik moved to Kings XI Punjab for the 2011 edition. A whopping sum of USD 900,000 was paid to negotiate the career of Dinesh Karthik by the Punjab franchise. But 282 points in 13 overs was not enough for Punjab to qualify for this tournament. This led to a transfer for the next season and he was bought by Mumbai Indians for a whopping sum of 12.5 crores.

2013 was Dinesh’s breakthrough year as he scored 510 runs in 19 innings in Mumbai’s victorious campaign. But even that was not enough for Mumbai to retain the number 3 designation for this edition.

The next three seasons saw Dinesh Karthik’s share in the IPL go up and down. In 2014, DD bought his services for 10.5 crores and 2015 saw RCB pocketing him for a whopping 12.5 crores. But the races did not come easily and his share fell. 2016 saw him play for the fourth different team in four years in the then newly formed Gujarat Lions.

But 2018 brought good news in a big way for the Tamil Nadu man as he was selected as the captain of KKR and bought for 7.4 crores ahead of IPL 2018. Karthik took the role of finisher for his team and did them justice with a solid score in the series.

Dinesh Karthik Awards and his achievements

Karthik has not had a chance to establish himself at the international level as Dhoni is already there to fill the role of wicketkeeper for the Indian cricket team. However, he never failed his fans or teammates whenever he had the chance to play. Karthik is assigned to play as an outfielder. And he did a great job in that role. As a middle-order batsman, Karthik helped India in many sticky situations.

Here are some records and achievements of Karthik in international cricket:

Karthik was the first Indian player to be named man of the match in a T20 international match against South Africa in 2006. In the 2018 Nidahas Trophy Final, Karthik played a match-winning knock, hitting a six in the last delivery of the game to help India win the series against Bangladesh.
