Being the eldest of four sons, Murali studied at St. Anthony’s College in Kandy, where he had his first days in cricket. Also being the brother-in-law of former Australian paceman Terry Alderman, Emerson kept his name in cricket records. He canceled Murali seven times, each of which was a regular delivery by Murali. However, when he started doosra, Emerson took it as a legal transfer.
