Biography of Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir is an Indian cricketer, born October 14, 1981 in Delhi, India. The aggressive left-handed batsman has represented the Indian cricket team internationally in all forms of sports. The former ICC Test number one batsman is known for his fitness, power on the pitch and overall ‘unsung hero’ for arguably the two greatest batting performances in the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup. Cup in 2011 ICC World Cup. Gauti, Gautam Gambhir is considered a master bowler for his quick footwork. In addition to his shooting skills, he is also a sharp outsider who is assigned to close.

Domestic and International Carrer

After the humiliating defeat in ICC WC 2007, BCCI let go of the seniors and looked for new talent, Gambhir was the only lucky one. His career began with a series against Bangladesh. He scored a century in this series and was selected for the next series against Ireland.

His unbeaten 80 earned him a MOM award and a ticket to be there for India in the 2007 ICC WT20 later that year. India defeated Pakistan in the all-important final and Gambhir was the main factor behind India’s success in the entire tournament. He scored 227 runs with 75 crucial runs in the final match in 54 balls.

In a moment of disappointment, Gambhir did not last a year in his career. In 2008, he notched up a century in the Ranji Trophy win for Delhi. He was selected as the first opening batsman in the CB series. He scored a century against the Sri Lankan team, in the next match.

He scored another century, this time against the Australians. At the end of the series, Gautam Gambhir was the highest scorer in the series which has a permanent place in the Indian cricket team.

In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Gautam Gambhir scored his only double century, also against Australia. After his Border-Gavaskar Trophy success, Gambhir was considering a tour of New Zealand after his top score against England in December 2008.

Despite the paint, Gautam Gambhir made things easy by posting another century in the second Test match. Ton helped India to five. In three matches, Gambhir scored 167 in the second innings and gave India a win that was later marred by rain. In the same year, Gambhir was awarded the ICC Test Player of the Year Award.

Gautam Gambhir – IPL

In the first Indian Premier League, Delhi Daredevils signed Gambhir for US$ 725,000 per year. In 2010, he was the team leader. He scored impressive runs in the tournament and became the only Delhi Daredevils player to score more than 1000 runs in the series.

The following year, he was picked up by the Kolkata Knight Riders for US $2.4 million. With this record amount, he became the highest paid cricketer in IPL history. Gambhir led the team to their first tournament title in 2012. Another title followed in 2014. Kolkata Knight Riders also performed well in the next few years. The team also competed in 2016 and 2017.

Gambhir’s IPL journey came full circle in 2018 when Delhi Daredevils signed him again. However, this time the team could not perform well and Gambhir decided to give up the captaincy.

He coached Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) during the recent Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season.

Accomplishments:-

  • He won the “Arjuna Award” in 2009 for his amazing performance in 2008.
  • In 2009, he was ranked No. 1 batsman in the ICC Test Rankings and won the title of “ICC Test Player of the Year”.
  • Under Gambhir’s leadership, the Kolkata Knight Riders won their IPL titles in 2012 and 2014.
  • Gambhir was the captain of the Indian team that played in the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, held in South Africa and won the event defeating Pakistan in the final. In 2010, Gambhir was named national team captain in the ODI series against New Zealand which was hosted by India. He scored 150 in Game 4 in Kolkata to help India win the series. Won man of the match award 12 times in ODIs
  • First Indian cricketer and fourth overall to reach five centuries in 5 consecutive Test matches
  • First Indian player to score 300+ runs in 4 consecutive Test series
  • Second cricketer (after Sir Viv Richards) to reach 11 fifties in 11 consecutive Test matches.
  • Gautam Gambhir and Chris Lynn set a record 184 runs in the opener while beating Kolkata Knight Riders against Gujarat Lions in the 2017 IPL season.
  • On March 16, 2019, he received the Padma Shri award.
