Biography of Ambati Rayudu
Ambati Rayudu was born on September 23, 1985 in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India.
His father Sambasiva Rao worked in the defense sector. Rayudu credits his father for his success and passion for cricket. His father took him to training camps, training sessions and competitions. At 16, Rayudu came into the limelight after scoring an unbeaten 177 against England in the U-19 ODI series in 2002.
He also bowled for Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy, becoming the youngest player to score a double hundred in the same match. Rayudu captained the Indian team in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2004. The team finished in the semi-finals. After an uneventful few years, Rayudu joined the ‘rebel’ Indian Cricket League (ICL) against BCCI norms and faced a permanent ban.
However, he received a waiver from the BCCI and was recruited by Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2010 IPL season. Rayudu achieved success in playing for MI and was instrumental in the success of the team. MI won three IPL titles in 2013, 15 and 17, with Rayudu being one of the top bowlers in the team. Chennai Super Kings bought him in 2018 and lifted another IPL trophy in 2018 and 21.
Rayudu made his international debut in 2013 against Zimbabwe. He was part of the 2015 World Cup squad but did not get a chance to play. He did not make the 2019 international team and announced his retirement from all forms of cricket but later called it off. Rayudu married his college friend Chennupalli Vidya, and the couple had two children.

There hasn’t been much excitement for teenage talent since Sachin Tendulkar rose through the ranks of Mumbai cricket. Those who watched 17-year-old Ambati Rayudu train at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore during the second half of 2002 knew where he was headed. Even Sunil Gavaskar thought he could be the next Indian cricketer.
If you had told the viewers that Rayudu would have to wait until he was almost 28 for his first India cap or that he would never play a World Cup match, they might have been watching you look like you’re crazy. Earlier that summer, Rayudu had scored an unbeaten 114-ball 177 and almost single-handedly led India Under-19 to victory against England.

Fighting spirit would be his downfall, however. Hyderabad cricket at that time was hopelessly corrupt and determined to promote mediocre talent who was the son of a former Indian cricketer. Rayudu, who has no such support, is always bullied. After a successful first season of Ranji Trophy, the event has ended with a bang. A move to Andhra followed, but the frenzy proved it to be a risky option. After his hopes of breaking into the national team ended, he joined the Indian Cricket League Rebels, returning to the fold in 2010.
With the Mumbai side taking advantage of his talent in the Indian T20 League, he would go on to the face follows. 3rd team title win. But the fever continued to affect his game and his reputation, and it wasn’t until 2013 that he got the chance to play for India. A dip in form before the 2015 World Cup cost him a place in the XI, and despite some flashes of brilliance afterwards, he could not regain his international dreams on track. Dropped from the 2019 World Cup squad, he responded to an insulting tweet, which more or less sealed his future.
In the Indian T20 League, a move to the Chennai side in 2018 saw him involved in the title-winning team for the fourth time in his career. Since then, however, he returned to the main theme of his work – many promises and little show for him. He could not make it to the Indian squad for the 2021 T20 World Cup. The Chennai team also put their faith in the 36-year-old batsman this year, buying him for ₹ 6.75 crore in the mega auction held in February 2022.
