Who is Wriddhiman Saha

Wriddhiman Saha is a cricketer who represents India internationally as well as Bengal in Indian national cricket. Born on October 24, 1984, Saha is a right-handed wicket-keeper. The Bengal man who is the current wicket-keeper batsman of the Indian team is the first choice, taking over the gauntlets after the retirement of MS Dhoni.

Saha played under-19 and under-22 before being promoted to first-class cricket. Saha made his one-day debut in the 2006/07 Ranji Trophy, against Assam. He scored a duck in his first innings in the next match. As he neared the end of his short run in the Ranji Trophy, he played three one-day matches for the eastern region in the Deodhar Trophy. Saha made his first-class debut in the 2007–08 Ranji Trophy, against Hyderabad where he scored 111 not out. Saha was also part of the Duleep Trophy East Zone team in the 2007-08 season. Saha’s century for Bengal on Ranji debut earned him a contract in the IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2008.

Saha was named in the Indian squad that played three limited-overs matches against the Israel Invitational XI, and the players made the squad based on his performance in the Indian Premier League. India won the series 3-0, Saha scored an unbeaten 85 in the third match in which India chased down 235. Saha also holds the record for the fastest century in domestic cricket. He scored 102 runs from 20 balls with a strike rate of 510 with four fours and 14 sixes in 2018.

Test Carrer

On 28 January 2010, Saha joined the Indian Test squad as a wicket-keeper in place of Dinesh Karthik for the upcoming home Test match against South Africa. As Saha is a glover, he was expected to play, but V. V. S. Laxman has yet to recover from injury and Rohit Sharma, the only professional batsman to remain, was injured while bowling in the heat of the first morning. As another batsman could not be delivered in time, Saha made his Test debut against South Africa.

He scored a duck in the first innings, but scored 36 in the second innings. In both innings, fast bowler Dale Steyn took his wicket. India lost the Test and Saha was dropped from the team for the second Test which India won to tie the two match series. Saha played the fourth match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy in January 2012 in place of MS Dhoni, who was banned for a fast-paced over rate, where he scored 35 in the first, which helped Virat Kohli to get his first Test century.

He also toured South Africa in December 2013, New Zealand in February 2014, and England in July 2014 as part of the Test team, but did not get a match. On 9 December 2014, he was selected to play his first Test match since January 2012 against Australia at the same ground where he played his last match after MS Dhoni suffered a thumb injury. He scored 25 runs in the first quarter and 13 runs in the second. He also played in 4 games of the series and had 35 points.

In 2016, he was selected for India’s West Indies tour as a wicket-keeper after Dhoni retired from Test cricket. In the first Test against West Indies, Saha became the third wicketkeeper in Indian cricket history to record six dismissals in a Test leg.

On 19 March 2017, Saha scored a century at the JSCA International Stadium against Australia by making 117 runs off 233 balls including 8 fours and 1 six. India was 328/6. Still, 123 behind Australia’s first innings total of 451 when he came into bat, he added 199 for the seventh wicket with Cheteshwar Pujara. On January 8, 2018, against South Africa, Saha became the first Indian wicketkeeper to take 10 catches in a Test. In November 2019, in the second Test against Bangladesh, Saha became the fifth Indian wicketkeeper to complete 100 dismissals in Test cricket.

ODI Carrer

After scoring 115 runs in the 2014 IPL Finals, he was invited to tour Bangladesh as part of the 15-man 3 ODI squad against the Bangladesh Cricket Team.

IPL by year

Wriddhiman Saha was picked by his hometown team, the Kolkata Knight Riders, in the first IPL auction. However, he was in the side for most of his three seasons with the Knight Riders, and in fact remained second choice to MS Dhoni when he was picked by the Chennai Super Kings in 2011. – again, for three periods. In the 2014 season, Saha was signed by Kings XI Punjab to be their first-order batsman. He proved to be a keeper, not only impressive in his wicket-keeping skills, but also from the willow, 362 runs at 32.90 and a strike rate of 145.28.
