Robin Uthappa is a special player, as he has scored twice at the Oval against England. He hails from Karnataka and became a household name when he played for India B in the 2005 Challengers Series.

Uthappa is an Indian wicket keeper, who made his One Day International debut in 2006 during England’s tour of India. Uthappa scored 86 on his debut before being run out.

Robbin Uthappa’s name will always remind us of the Oval against England in 2007, hitting over the head of the ball, after he upgraded his stick. He was in the Challengers Series while playing for India-B in 2005. In the next challenger in 2006, he did well. At the same time, a team was looking for a young cricketer, he was selected for the ODI team to play against England. In the Indore match, he scored a very good 86.

After that, he joined Rajasthan Royals where he took the position of fly-half for RR.

2007 ICC CUP

It all looked like a fairy tale as he was selected for the ICC World Cup 2007. Although he turned out to be a memorable one, Uthappa failed in his three matches as India saw an exit from the perennial tournament. He scored 9, 3 and 18 runs in three games.

Then, Uthappa joined the Indian youth team led by MS Dhoni for the 2007 T20 World Cup. Robin scored 113 runs in 6 innings, including a half-century in the match against Pakistan.

He showed his class in one match against Pakistan. Taking the lead, India were reeling at 36-4 before Uthappa broke a good partnership with MS Dhoni. The Kerala batsman went on to score a perfect 50 runs from just 39 balls, laced with four fours and 2 sixes. India ended up winning the match by one ball.

Robin Uthappa played an important role in building India until their form started to decline after the 2008 Asia Cup. Virat Kohli, who was considered to be India’s next big cricket star, quickly replaced Uthappa in the Indian scheme of things. He returned briefly to the team but closed his position in any form. He played his last ODI match in 2015 against Zimbabwe and since then he has remained out of luck.

• Pune Warriors bought him for a whopping 2.1 million dollars (approx. Rs 9.4 crore) in the 2011 Indian Premier League auction in Bangalore. He is the second most expensive player in this market behind Gautam Gambhir, who was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for $2.4 million. Uthappa is Pune Warriors top scorer with 405 runs in 16 matches.
• In January 2015, her mother Roselyn Uthappa filed a case against her father Venu Uthappa and two others for allegedly keeping her mother in a cruel condition. The other two accused are Venu Uthappa’s relative, Calvin Varghese, and his wife Manjushri.
• Robin Uthappa married tennis player Sheethal Goutham on March 3, 2016. They have a son, Neale Nolan Uthappa, born October 10, 2017.
• Everyone in his family is a big fan of Christopher Nolan and there is a writer called Neale Donald Walsch, Robin and his wife like Neale so they decided to name their son Neale Nolan Uthappa. Similarly, Neale and Nolan mean the same thing – a famous champion.
• During the IPL 2020 auction, he was bought by Rajasthan Royals for 3 crore. In the IPL 2022 auction, Uthappa was bought by Chennai Super Kings for a base price of Rs 2.2 crore.
